The HPR curriculum was originally created for a four-week special education summer school program running four half-days per week in WY. However, by using just one activity for a 30-50 minute session, facilitators successfully use this curriculum for individual weekly sessions spread over several days or months. Programs also use one or more activities for group field trips, or summer/ holiday programs and camps. Because each activity has suggested learning goals, it is easy to target the specific needs of student or groups. By simply adjusting words used, the same activity can be effective for a wide range of ages.

Along with two full lesson plans per day, additional extensions and ideas, help you creatively expand or adapt most activities. This curriculum is not the be-all end-all bible of HPR activities, but rather seeds to help grow your confidence to creatively meet the needs of the unique students you will serve. As in all equine facilitated learning and therapies, the facilitator is there to create and hold space for the client to explore and discover answers WITH THE HORSE(S). As such, these HPR activities are simply “a plan from which you WILL diverge”. Always follow your students’ lead and trust the process. After all, Horse Powered Reading is a powerful synergy between reading skills, motivation, self-efficacy, and persistence. Humans may set up and prepare materials to facilitate learning the reading skills, but horses do the most important work of building student motivation, self-efficacy, and persistence!
